Luz De Mi Vida
Un Grito De Amor
My practice embodies the spirit of rasquachismo, a creative approach rooted in resilience, resourcefulness, and cultural defiance. Rasquache, a term originating in Tejano and Chicano communities, refers to a makeshift, do-it-yourself aesthetic that transforms the discarded, the humble, and the overlooked into something powerful and expressive. It is an art of survival, a way of making do with what is available while infusing it with personal and cultural significance.
My work challenges traditional ideas of value and beauty by celebrating imperfection, hybridity, and the vibrant energy of the marginalized. I elevate the underdog spirit by transforming what’s been discarded into something sacred.
Each piece is the result of deep reflection. In making them, I allowed myself to be fully present and unmasked—something I’m rarely afforded in public, where the world expects me to conform and shrink myself to fit. My practice is an act of resistance. It’s how I carve out space to exist without pretense.
I’ve developed a series of procedures and rituals that give me space to center myself and process the traumas and stresses of navigating life as Alberto Sanchez.
Luz De Mi Vida is a celebration of my struggles with neurodivergence and my inability to communicate my most urgent needs—for fear of being seen as combative or disrespectful. As a very large Brown man, I’m often perceived as a threat first. But like most people, what I really want is friendship and compassion.
Born on the fringes of American society, it often feels like my life has been one long attempt to assimilate—to connect with “the American” and their Dream. In a world that routinely overlooks the ingenuity of the Rasquache, I aim to highlight their power. Creativity doesn’t need abundance—it thrives in necessity.
My art is a testament to the resilience of those who create against the odds, who find meaning and expression in the remnants of daily life.
